Creative Update
My urge to oekaki has waned considerably, and not because the last few entries with posted oekaki received no response. I am not feeling the urge to do it right now. I must admit, it surprised me the E&S pic I drew for that icon got no comment, because I thought it was one of my better pieces at catching the characters.
So desu ne...
Anyway, here is probably the last one for a while:

I really do seem to have a web muse, though the gender and how he/she looks has yet to be revealed. Evan and Grunt seem to allow this muse to move around because they do not complain about it much. I wonder if both of them are involved, since both artwork and writing are involved when I work on an art page. It would not surprise me they were secretly collaborating.
I plan on continuing working on the website, retrieving that which was lost in the McAffee fiasco last summer and putting it back where it belongs in the site hierarchy. I am determined to get the drawings that are two years old or more up on the site. This included both Gravi and DBZ art. I have a bunch of DBZ art (some yaoi) most people have never seen.
I also need to get the fanfiction section developed. I have a few places where I am a bit stumped on design and presentation. When I get beyond that, I will feel better.

I hope to complete two writing pieces this semester, but with the website getting in the way, it would not surprise me if nothing gets done. Some are so close to completion and then something comes along, I realize I need to mention something for clarification, and the story grows all over the place again, like some kind of infectious rash. Or, I see the turn of phrase I originally used really sucks so I have to fix it. I am pushing the most on 'the razor fic'. *laugh* That damned razor has STILL not gotten its description in the story yet! I have lots of notes about male body hair, though!

I plan on digging through my sketchbooks for unfinished pieces as well. I think some pieces will need to be scanned before I continue working with them.

I played in Painter 8 yesterday. Ugh, pure dreck. I need to get used to the different interface and ALL the new tools. I think what will happen is I will find some brushes that work for me and stick to them initially. Once I get comfortable with those tools and get successful pics out of them I will try others. I bought a book on it over a year ago and now I need to try and find it.

Wrote about 170 words on the 'razor fic' yesterday during lunch. Grunt is ever-so happy.
Sent my pic and fic entries off to the Vault's Yaoiful Yuletide Contest. I do not expect to even place in any category but entering a contest every once in a while keeps me on my toes and gets me to produce and complete stuff. It was convenient that January drabble's theme was one that also fit the fic contest. I sent links to the 2004 Xmas card and the pirate pic for my art entries.
The little icons I do occasionally for the contests also challenge me to do something small but complicated.

The image is titled "Sex" because that is the subject matter.
Now this piece has a bit of history, because it took so long to finish it and it has both my old style of drawing the Gravi boys along with my recent style of cg colouring. It is also the first explicit sexual pic I have drawn.
The original drawing was begun in early March, 2003. I used no resources for the pose, which now I can see is really off when it comes to how Shiyuuichi is 'plugged into' Eiri. The bodies are longer and thinner than what I draw now. You can see the same style with my first Gravi work, when I was practicing getting away from the beefy Dragonball Z bodies I had been drawing before. It took a month to finally make the decision to ink this and it was a sloppy job with only one ink thickness. A lot of Japanese white ink touch-ups had to be done to the drawing.
I know the faces are not very representative of the boys and the only thing that is even remotely designating who is who here and that this pic is supposed to be a Gravi fanart is the hair colours. I decided it was important to post this anyway because it chronicles the progression of where I was at one time drawing the Gravi boys.
The drawing sat in the sketchbook until early January, 2005, when the decision to finally sign off on it occurred. This drawing was in the same pad I used for the Saiyuki drawing so I signed off on both on the same day.
This was scanned in at 72 dpi and cleaned up a little more so the scan "chatter" was gone and the parts of the whites were not such a dull dove grey.
All my playing in oekaki paid off when it came to colouring the skin and hair in Photoshop 7. I pulled up my custom swatches, which has a lot of skintones I have sampled from various graphics and lots of E&S hair colour chips I have sampled from fanart and graphics.
Originally the skintones were done with only two colours and straight cel shading. It did not look very good so I added at least three more skintones to each body and used the smudge tool to blend the tones together. Doing oekaki for as long as I have and the techniques I have learned from various oekaki experiments really helped with the colouring the skin of this piece.
The pillows were done with various solid colour and pattern fill layers. The bright orange pillow also has a filter. The bed headboard has a wood pattern fill with colour adjustment to make it darker. The wall has another pattern fill which was lightened.
The sheet was done with a pattern fill layer and another layer for some of the shadows and highlights. Other shadows/highlights were done on the pattern fill layer.
The 3-D effect of the windows were done two different ways. The vertical shadows were made by drawing the shape on the wall layer with the polygon lasso tool and using Brightness/Contrast to darken the section slightly. Each of the horizontal shadows were put on a separate layer. A large rectangle of the wall texture was made and copied. Each layer was transformed so the angle of the grain met with the perspective. The shape of the window sill was drawn with polygon lasso tool, then the selection was inverted so when the delete key was pressed the textured sill shape was left.
The outside background is actually three photos 'stitched' together in Photoshop. I took these photos in Hawaii back in 1990.
Large version to the usual suspects will be emailed tonight.

Working title "The fic that will not end":
Our corner store delivered every box of Okamotos they had on their shelf to enhance our other rampaging appetite but we still ran out and the store would not receive another shipment until Saturday.
Working title "Koenma":
After fighting demons and attempting to keep the world in balance, I find myself sitting at a school desk, just like the kind my Spirit Detective would sit in, if he deemed it necessary to even show up for school, that is.
Working title "razor fic":
I hear a familiar rattle as my nurse slips the silver brushed-finish travel pillbox with my noon and six p.m. med doses into my pants pocket.
Working title "Mimosa for Brunch":
Croissants are a delectable bread but would leave sharp crumbs on the sheets I know would be found later by delicate anatomy.
Working title "piggy":
The bandage protecting the broken skin of the impact point did not cover the large purple bruise liberally splattered over E's left temple, the lower edge causing his eye beneath to partially close.
Working title "sing for me":
The fact both sons had chosen life mates incapable of shitting kids continued to blow the bastard's gaskets, even though our sister had produced a healthy child.
Working title "mythology fic":
The howling, rushing, swirling power came to its apex with the speaking of the name, then immediately subsided, leaving everything silent except for a single gleeful giggle from the god's palm.
Some of these are just outlines while others are almost completed and still others are half-way done. I have more on the craptop so I may post this again with others at another time.

A warm THANK YOU to those who emailed me their comments about the Saiyuki pic! I do feel accomplished with that one because it did challenge me on quite a few levels. I have never drawn that many characters so close together before. The last time I had four bodies on one page was the "He Who Must Be Cranky" pic from a few years ago. Haven't done much creatively lately. I am working to get some more webpages ready for this weekend's weekly update. I realized I have some older work that needs to be posted, as well as some newer work I had thought I had posted but had not done so. I need to get some work posted so I can enter the Vault's latest contest. (http://www.templeofthegoddess.com/files/contests.html)
I also need to get the fanfic section up and running but I have to decide exactly how I want to set up the pages. I may post a mini-poll later if I cannot make a decision on the interface.

My cohorts at the site did not recognize my work initially because I specifically worked on having less lineart. Most comments were about how it looked like a Greek statue, which I think is quite accurate with the style I used.

*laughs* I am batting a thousand with these icon contests! I hope I can pull something together for the next one by the deadline. They really are challenging for me and that's the whole point of me participating. I am now finding my lack of votes amusing. Maybe I should start doing some butt-ugly ones and see what happens! *snicker*
I really need to get that challenge drabble started on paper sometime soon.
Both E & S have been feeding me little tidbits occasionally, completely unrelated to any working titles, so I am just writing the bits down. Maybe they will be integrated somewhere, maybe not.

OMG! Pencil art from another fandom?
Has hell frozen over?
Don't expect this to happen very often. I still have a lot of Gravi in me. This Saiyuki pic just had to come out.
While it is officially called "Saiyuki Sleeping", the subtitle is "Hands from Hell" because I had to deal with six different hands in various positions in this pic. It was quite aggravating.
It was just one of those nights, when only one very large bed was available at the inn, probably the bridal suite, and because they had been on the road for too many days, no one wanted to sleep on the floor. Playing Mahjong for the bed was out of the question. So they all crawled in and went to sleep.
Folks knowing the universe will recognize a few hints I put in - Goku holding Sanzo's hair while lying on top of him, Hakkai and Gojyo's hands resting together, Gojyo's other hand not being seen but may be causing Sanzo's frown, Sanzo's possessive hand on Goku's shoulder.
As usual, the majority of the piece was drawn and shaded with a #F pencil. Sanzo's hair was outlined with a #2H. Hakkai's hair was darkened with a #2B.
Hairstyles were referenced from a variety of manga, artbooks, official anime guides and doujinshi sources. Those hairstyles are a bit more complicated than the usual basic bishounen haircuts.
Originally, the drawing only had the four boys. A blank space was in the top left corner, so as an afterthought, a sleeping Hakuryu (Jeep) was added. He was referenced from manga and an official anime guide. His presence gives the pic a more innocent and sweet feeling.
After adding Hakuryu, who was accidentally drawn in a different style (I had been drawing oekaki prior to drawing him so that technique was still in my hand), the rest of the group had to be outlined as well. A #2H was used to outline everyone to match the dragon.
The pic was scanned (read more about the scanning hell in previous entry) and a built-in Photoshop texture was added as the sheet they are sleeping on so peacefully.

Art Update:
The Saiyuki pic was completed and scanned Wednesday evening.
I ended up having to scan it in four different sections because the scanner bed does not get the entire image. It likes to cut off the edges.
If I keep using 9x12 sketch pads I need to draw a border around the page to keep me from going off the page. My art teachers did their job too well by teaching me to use the entire 'canvas'. Think about it: people learning how to draw usually put a little sketch in the middle of the page and that's it. I did it - everybody does it. Now I try to start the sketch so it will cover the entire piece of paper, which screws me up when it comes to scanning.
Anyway, cobbling the pic together was a pain and I did some compromising to get it halfway decent. Even though I had written down the light/dark scanning settings and used them for each scan I still had to adjust the brightness to get the pages to match at the seams. Arg.... Then I flattened it and hit auto-contrast, then adjusted the auto-contrast back so it was not so intense.
I am now trying out different textures for the sheet background.
I also found that OLD E&S sex pic I inked back in March 2003 lurking in a sketchbook so I scanned it in as well. I just do not draw like that anymore! The boys have such long limbs - definitely not the muscle boys I do now. Also, I just do not believe S is in a good position to be actually 'speared' by E. Or maybe E is being 'bent' at an angle that's not painful.
Despite these facts, I have decided to go ahead and colour it with my 2005 colouring skills. I will add a photo background if I can find something in my stash of recent photos I shot. If I cannot find something, I will need to cg some kind of environment bg. Maybe all the the "gilt" will help this piece some.

The boys have such long limbs - definitely not the muscle boys I do now. Also, I just do not believe S is in a good position to be actually 'speared' by E. Or maybe E is being 'bent' at an angle that's not painful.
Despite these facts, I have decided to go ahead and colour it with my 2005 colouring skills. I will add a photo background if I can find something in my stash of recent photos I shot. If I cannot find something, I will need to cg some kind of environment bg. Maybe all the the "gilt" will help this piece some.

The Saiyuki pic kicked me a little. Jeep's outlines turned out really dark so I have had to go in and outline the rest of the pic.
I think the subtitle of this pic is going to be the 'hands from hell' because I had to draw SIX of them, with two interacting together and one holding onto hair. Argh!

Saiyuki Pic
It is almost done. Yesterday, I realized I was missing someone important from the pic: Jeep! So I drew him in, also asleep. I think having him there will add some innocence to the pic. I am attempting to imply yaoi (or at least BL) like the mangaka, Kazuya Minekura, without it actually being yaoi.
I am going to look at the pic later tonight to see if everything looks fine. I am still avoiding the sheet wrinkles because I SUCK at them.

Writing
Shockingly enough, I put in 100 words on the razor fic last week. I know it does not seem like much, but since I did not touch ANY writing during the holiday, it was a lot for me.
I am hoping to put something together for the January gravi_muse_meet LJ community challenge, especially since Grunt thwacked me over the head Friday afternoon as I was walking to the parking lot after work and I sat there in the car, searched for something to write on, then wrote up some crap on the back of a mailing cardboard. I just haven't gotten the outline to virtual manuscript. The idea of trying to write something with 100 words is daunting for someone like me, who details to death every little move, object and nuance.

Icon Stuff
Sometimes I make an icon for the live journal community, "gravi_awards" contest, knowing I will never win anything. I am lucky to even get a single vote, like I did with this icon, which had to have at least three words from the song, "In the Moonlight".
I do not think this one, about advertising, got ANY votes when I submitted it a month ago:
I refuse to use official artwork, only my own art, which I know shoots me in the foot every time. They are good challenges for me, when I decide to enter. Some of the weekly contests do not interest me, or I do not have the art to work something up.

Grunt is really pissed at me because no writing got done during the holiday week. I kept trying to get to it but never did find the energy to do it.
