Current Mood: in fucking pain, damnit!
Current Music: Final Fantasy I game music in background

I finally got re-approved at one of the oekaki sites I had let expire. So, I had to draw something to say hello.

In photoshop I sketched another version of that extended arm oekaki inspired by the image I saw from the ad for Martin Scorsesee films. I don't expect much out of it, but it is getting me working in ps doing true sketches, which is different and new. I am always working on my processes.

I am finding the urge to do oekaki waning. It will be back eventually.

#339: Experiment

This is an experimental piece using the Gravi boys in bed. It is the most explicit oekaki I have done so far. The site allows yaoi, so I did it. In fact, the owner drew a picture of just a penis once.

At a new board, hochuuami oekaki:

#86: Boys and a Butterfly

With the posting of this week's oekaki group on the website, I will have posted a total of 268 oekaki. I started drawing and posting oekaki in late 2002. That number does not reflect all of the ones I have in reserve for posting later. I have posted every oekaki I have ever done, even the dreck. I plan on having every 2004 oekaki posted by the end of the year. I wonder if I will have met the 300 mark by the end of this year? At the rate I am currently drawing, it would not surprise me in the least to go over 300 pieces.

Then I will start all over again, accumulating oekaki to post!

Creative Urges

I did a hell of a lot of sleeping this weekend and it was glorious, even though I got zero studying done.

The other thing I did was oekaki, because it seemed my creative urge is needing it badly.

Here is the scary list of them all.

Remember, oekaki boards cycle through their drawings so these numbers are temporary. If someone is looking at this entry a month after posting, these images may not be what is in place. At that time, you will have to find them on the website, if they have been posted yet. The numbers are not retained at the website.

Over at Darkest Lynk's board: http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/

#58: Tsume from Wolf's Rain - profile drawing

#59: Toboe from Wolf's Rain - profile drawing

Over at Swordbreaker: http://www.swordbreaker.com/oekaki/

#43: Gojyo from Saiyuki

At Artist's Cafe: http://cafe.firefly.nu/oekaki/index.php
#87: Cute boy - a personal challenge piece

At Tearing Us Apart: http://members.lycos.co.uk/eva94589/oekaki/index.php

#318: Some basic guy - was trying something a little more subtle with character design.

At Waterless Death: http://members.lycos.co.uk/waterlessdeath/oekaki//index.php

#53: Youkai Prince - wanted to try something with narrow lines and more a little more dramatic lighting on the facial features and hair.

Wandering Souls: http://members.lycos.co.uk/ssango/oekaki/index.php

#78: Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho, with an earring

Obsession Oekaki Central: http://w4.oekakies.com/p/0bsesion/p.cgi

#329: Gravi Boy huggle

I did two over at Oekaki Central, after FINALLY being able to sign up again after so long.

http://www.oekakicentral.com/traininggrounds/

#942: Youkai Gentleman

#69: Youkai

They take you off the list if you do not draw there for a while. Part of the problem at the site is it is so busy, sometimes a person just cannot get on to do anything. Unlike the slower boards, people are submitting left and right, so as soon as you actually complete a piece and submit it, there is a big chance you will find it already about 10 places down in the listing. They are also VERY strict about the quality of the oekaki done at the various boards. I will never leave the Training Area and never rate more than the lowest of the low, even though my work is much higher quality than most in the same area. The standards are THAT high. I would LOVE to be able to manipulate the applet in ways the professionals do but I need more tutorials on the techniques they are using and NOTHING is available, at least nothing I have been able to find so far.

Maybe you will be able to see the pics here:

My username is onna_crap because it was simple and to-the-point.

Another view of Lord Darushira from Wolf's Rain is now oekaki #57 at the usual board:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/

The dubs call him Lord Darcia. I listened to the Japanese and they pronounced it "Darushira" as far as I can tell.

I was actually falling asleep in front of the computer when I was doing this one. I kept just drifting off, so I wrapped it up quickly and went to bed.

Kiba from Wolf's Rain is now oekaki #56 at the usual board:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/

I am bloody exhausted. The world will have to go on without me tonight. I am going to try and go to bed.

Everyone, ganbatte kudasai!!!

Hige from Wolf's Rain is now an oekaki, #55.

http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/

Yes, I referenced screencaps and that's why it actually looks good, looks like the character and it is not one of my usual pieces of shitty scribble I do on the fly. I DID take some liberties on the hair because some details are just not there in the anime. And all the cel shading and single strands of hair are all mine.

Ignore the total time shown. I did not take that long to do it. It sat for some time while I was having some deep conversations with Rula and Aja via AIM last night.

And this one is the second try. I was 3/4ths done and was taking a break over at AIM to see if Rula was around. AIM decided to cause trouble and opened up what I thought was a new browser window for no reason whatsoever so I closed it, not realizing it had actually over-rode the oekaki browser window and I had just lost all my work.

The first edition portraits of each character will be done with screencap references. I will even make a point to say that on the webpage dedicated to Wolf's Rain, so people will understand I did not pull these out of my pea brain. I believe in being completely honest about what I use when I draw and one of those things I am honest about is telling people I sometimes look at things to draw a piece and give credit to the original source(s).

I suspect I will draw these charas again later, trying to do it from memory.

Next in line? Kiba. I am debating on Cher because of her killer eyes. If I want Blue soon I will have to skip a lot of eps to get to her human form. I am watching WR again while I am doing these oekaki and I really do not want to get out of sequence. Of course, the muse may demand I go hunt down Blue and do some screencaps. I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

I am catching a lot of nuance in the story this time. Of course, part of it could be because I am watching it in Japanese, where the original nuance is in place. It has not been butchered by the dubs. However, I enjoyed the series with just the dubs as my initial inspiration enough I bought a copy of the series for my own. Sure, it's the bootleg. Eventually, if I am really wanting to do so, I will get the authorized edition. But first I will get the authorized editions of Saiyuki!

Lord Darcia from Wolf's Rain is now oekakied, #54:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/

At another board is something completely different - where the style came from, I have not a clue. #41

http://www.swordbreaker.com/oekaki/

Cheza the Flower Maiden is now oekaki-ed.

http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/

#51

NOTE: Yes, I AM referencing various screenshots to get these characters to look correct, especially since they have distinct features and clothing.

I currently do not have the characters down enough to draw them strictly from memory. However, I am not copying a cel, either. These are my renderings of the characters, referencing about three to four screencaps for each drawing.

Sunday, November 14, 2004

Toboe kept telling me it was his turn to have an oekaki done. So, I did one around 8am this morning.

Looks like more of the Wolf's Rain cast are nagging for an oekaki, too. I did a lot of screencaps today, with the intent of drawing Cheza and Darcia soon and Hige and Kiba later.

Creative Update:

Last week, pirate fic threw all sorts of little scenes at me. I now have 23 specific things I want to cover in the storyline. Also, the story is wanting to move to an a/u sf universe for some reason. All of this walks around with me in my back pocket, in a little notebook.

The Saiyuki pic is just sitting there, three-quarters done. I cannot wait until the end of the semester. I know if I would pick up a pencil and the tablet I would sit down and work on it for hours, but I just do not have the time to do that now.

Tsume from Wolf's Rain has been pestering me a LOT lately, so after doing a bunch of screencaps over the past few days, tonight I went out to my usual oekaki board (http://members.lycos.co.uk/darkestlynk/oekaki/) and tried to draw him. Look for number 48.

To keep my sanity, I have continued to do oekaki the past few weeks, just not talked about it much here.

A couple of pure Photoshop pics are in the works. One of them, of all people, is of Ryuichi. He just stepped up and was captured. I am also doing faux oekaki in Photoshop when I do not want to be online with the oekaki applet. It's a different 'feel' in some ways, to use the more sophisticated Photoshop tools to do such simple-styled drawing.

The thesis paper really does fall here, since it is something creative. I am going back to the final and deciding to add some 'better' words to explain myself and to sound more like me, not some 3rd grade writer. I need to concentrate on this tomorrow, in between lots of sleeping.

Some stuff for 'the fic that will not end' showed up in my mind and have been scribbled down but not put into any manuscript form.

Bits and pieces of writing are here and there.

Initial idea for Xmas card has been sketched out.

Wednesday, November 10, 2004

This is Rula (fel) and I's second art collaboration.

The first was a piece in Open Canvas where we drew in real time together, which was a blast.

This piece is from her colouring book - my take of Shuichi as a merman:

It is a combination of cel shading, gradients and various Photoshop filters.

I got a free Photobucket account to store pieces like this now - thought it was time to do so, especially since I don't know how much more free space I have on our surfbest account.

Demonstration

If you go to this oekaki board, you will see number 37 was done by me:

http://www.swordbreaker.com/oekaki/index.php

I have set this piece up with the animation option engaged for a reason. I did this as a demo for one of the Anime Club folks who did his first oekaki on this board yesterday, after I showed him the interface and how it differed from Photoshop.

The tablet I was using at the office was acting up so the demo I did there really sucked and I did not even save it. I think it was a driver issue. I was using one of the older tablets so I suspect the new tablet drivers over-rode the old ones. Plus, the tablets in the lab are 6x8 and I am used to a larger tablet (9x12).

I am posting this here so those remotely curious can see my basic approach to drawing (how I start a sketch, etc.) and specifically how I work with oekaki and pure cg drawing/colouring like I am now doing in Photoshop.

I encourage you to try oekaki - it is addictive!

Tuesday, November 02, 2004

The Saiyuki pic lost steam, probably because I haven't felt well enough to do anything with pencil. I looked at it yesterday and it is over half-done.

I did a ton of 'mood' icons last night, mostly with my oekaki but some with my regular drawings. I had already worked up some of these with the regular art a few months ago, but now they are going to become official. I will post them within the body of the entries instead of having them replace the three icons on my regular lj.

I considered looking at my writing today, but I am just not in the mood. I know I have just a little bit to do on some pieces. *sigh*

I need to get well first, then perhaps my creativity will be seriously kick-started again. The only thing keeping me going is oekaki. I can always depend on that when I am not doing anything else creative.
