The dealie thing rat thought would help bump up the headset microphone so I could use the voice recognition software finally showed up after being on backorder.
I must admit - I was leary about it working because all the directions from Dragon Naturally Speaking kept adamantly stating a Soundblaster soundcard was required. Soundblaster does have an enhancing box but it was almost $100 and what rat found was $33. The thing is called a iMic high resolution USB audio capture box. It is not made by Apple, despite the name of the name of the product but it looks like it was designed for the mac because the directions have both mac and pc listed, which is unusual with some things. (a lot of multimedia software is geared for pc only now, like Adobe Premiere and Macromedia Authorware) Naturally, this box is geared for WinXtraProblems so only otaku gets to play with it - which is the machine I write with anyway. We are still balking at putting XP on our machines but I know I 'video station' will have to have it so the latest and players will work.
So, I plug it in, did the talking bit for the levels and it worked! Dragon liked it, so we turned the Olympics down and I did my first training speaking bit into the headset mic. Reading the piece I picked was very frustrating. Why? Because it was poorly written! I kept having to stop, back up and speak again because of the clumsy sentences. Ugh!
Let me explain - when I read out-loud I remove all superfluous 'that's and most contractions (it's, he's, there's, etc.) and I sometimes even delete 'there are' and related and change the sentences to tighten them. Reading dreck littered with the things I cannot stand out-loud was very difficult. I think I need to choose something else they offered for the read, like "Alice in Wonderland". I know its rhythm a little anyway so it would probably be easier to 'express' it vocally.
I also had the software read some of my manuscripts to understand my writing patterns better. Some of the stuff is working so I wonder how well the software will handle it. I need to train this more, and read up on what the software will recognize as 'real' words over punctuation words and all that shit.
I am looking forward to getting some of the large babblings into edocs. I have a LARGE a/u in one of my little notebooks and much of it is just plot points! Sure, they are somewhat fleshed plot points, but only plot points, nonetheless. That is the whole point of this software - to allow me to 'talk' the story into the doc and save my poor carpel tunneled hands. I am thinking I can manually place the punctuation but I am going to give the software a chance.
In other creative news - I haven't been able to do any actual writing the past few days but I HAVE gone back and read through manuscript print-outs with notes all over them to add to the stories. I hope to get some of those notes in (by hand) eventually.
I have also been having little squirts of sentences popping out, so I just make little scribbles and note which story it is supposed to go with. Some things are bits that are tied to other bits in other works-in-progress. Can we say continuity even before something is published? Or is it being anal retentive?
The boys are taking me all over the place so I hope they eventually come out successfully. Hold on to your balls, boys!
I really need to do more oekaki, but otaku is not set up for it and I really don't WANT to set it up for it. I do not want any art software or related stuff on otaku - it is for writing and writing research only. I have just gotten lazy about using Last Gasp so not a lot of digital art is happening.
I DID finally update witzend this weekend, though. More animefest photos posted.
And speaking of witzend, I got a request from someone to post some of my artwork on someone's yahoo 360 account gallery. Regrettably, I said no, but explained art theft issues and so I hope the person understands. It also reminded me I need to get back with Joules about what images she would like to host at wavewrights, a place I DO trust.

Last week I decided I would use the morning time before I get ready for work to get some writing done and it has been a good decision.
This morning I was able to FINALLY get a page of story scribbles into the edoc. A little over 500 words later and I was done with that page. I date my scribbles so I know when I wrote them and can adjust as my style has changed. Some of the scribble was written on 10/14/03. The rest was written on 11/9/04. That's right - I have stuff that old, and older - working.
I have these ideas and I make notes all over the place so I do not have to think about that particular part anymore. I have my notes and eventually get them into an edoc.
I STILL do not have my voice recognition software working - we are waiting for a box to come in that will enhance the microphone. *sigh*

Despite the lack of 'like' for SSS, I wrote over 450 words on the 'hospital' fic yesterday. I always find it interesting seeing which story or stories the muse picks each day for me to play with. I barely touched the 'cat' fic, and the one closest to completing - the 'betrayal' fic, just sat there for the most part. I read through sections of it, adjusted a few words, but really did not 'feed' it anything new.
I am finding I am needing to add some more dialogue to the 'hospital' fic - especially coming out of the idiot's mouth. Occasionally he speaks to me and points out how he needs to be heard more. In this case, he was griping about how he was not being shown as being a little guilty for shirking his responsibility. Of course, the poor guy is doing his best given the circumstances and his job responsibilities, and all his prep did not stop the grumpy guy from fucking up.
These additions are expanding the characters a little, showing their growth within their relationship, so while I had hoped I would be closer to a closure for the fic, I see it as something important to explore. When writing mostly one-shots, these tidbits of personality have to pop in and out quickly or they bog down the story. Yet, they still have to be there to help tie things throughout my little universe.

Thyroid is fucking with my creative time in the evenings.
Got a little more done on the cat fic last night but passed out shortly afterward.
Looked over the betrayal fic for the past few days and finally got a section a little more straightened out. It still is not perfect, but it's getting there.
I think I am going to have to break down and order another power cord for otaku. I hate having to lug the cord from the computer/game room to the bedroom and neither plug I use in each room is very convenient to begin with.
